Keith Lawrence
Keith Lawrence is a
very versatile DJ with over 25 years’ dj-ing experience playing Funk,
soul, Hip-Hop, Boogie and Reggae. Whether it's Jay-Z's after party,
dj'ing @ Musiq soulchild, Average white band, Maceo Parker or Joe
Budden concerts or supplying riddims for Black Twang, Rodney-P, Tenor
Fly & Daddy Freddy to spit over in the clubs dancehall style, Keith
delivers for whatever arena it may be & deliver he does.
His
love of Black music was instilled in him at five years old when his
father, a sound system operator himself bought him a record player and
gave him a bunch of reggae 45's. From that moment on, the reggae music
bug had bitten him. He was & still is hooked!
Keith started
his DJ career in 1985 whilst still in school with a soul sound system
called 'Magic Touch' from South London. He was brought in as the
'Reggae man' but playing the soul, boogie and hip-hop in the house
parties of the time led to those genres having an everlasting effect on
him just like Reggae.
He began his 'community radio
presentation' in 1989 with FAZE 1 FM, the same station that spawned a
young Fabio & Grooverider. The station folded not too long after so
Keith joined POWERJAM FM in 1990 and was there until 2000. From 2000 to
2007 he moved to BASSLINE FM.
During the EIGHTEEN years on
community radio, Keith always played an alternative selection of soul,
funk, r&b and hip-hop, especially UK hip-hop. Because of this,
Keith managed to get respect and made links with the artists from the
UK Hip-Hop scene and thus gave him the drive to set up his own record
label in 2003 which he named MUZIK-ED RECORDINGS.
It also gave him the chance
to put his two main musical influences Reggae and Hip-Hop into his
production work. Since Keith started in production (before 2003), it
has led him to work with a diverse array of artists like Maxi Jazz
(Faithless), veteran reggae singer the late Jnr Delgado, Jerry Dammers
(The Specials) Keith Leblanc (Drummer of Sugarhill gang), Rodney-P, TY,
Daz-I-Kue (Bugz in the attic), Spacek, Andy Smith, and more.
Incidentally,
Keith was nominated for 'Best underground hip-hop radio presenter' in
the UK Hip-Hop awards in 2001. The reviews for his production work have
also received critical acclaim too. During this time Keith's musical
knowledge helped him to work in most of the top specialist record shops
in London - Wyld Pytch, Major Flavas, Unity, Reds, Dub vendor etc. He
may have even sold you a record or three in the 14 years he was doing
that!!
His DJ skills have carried him internationally to places
like Athens, Austria, Berlin, Barcelona, Denmark, Dublin (Resident for
4 years!), Estonia, Holland, Montenegro, Oslo and Paris.
As a
Brixton man himself, Keith has also promoted his own nights locally
helping to keep 'True school music' out there. Nights that have involved
Bugz in the attic, Andy Smith, Trojan Sound System, Stereo mc's, Maxi
Jazz - and much more.
Keith likes to have a laugh as well. He and his
brother supplied the voices of the 'Bling dogs' in Aardman animations
'Creature Comfort' series. It was first shown on ITV in 2005 and is
still being repeated up to this day. "My brother and I have always been
big fans of the show so when my mate Dan who was working on it asked if
we wanted to get involved, we jumped at the chance! We had fun doing
it!"
Keith's passion for REAL Black music has led him to feel
'at home at last' with Colourful Radio and whether you listen to his
reggae show, his Drive Time show Fridays or when he's sitting in for
any of the DJs on the station, his knowledge, professionalism, love and
experience shines through every time.
